No Return Bottles

This assemblage is made up of two bottles of the same type. Together they allow us to determine the type of this bottle The stippled glass and shape indicates that they are No Return beer bottles. Also the shoulders of the bottle are embossed with “NOT TO BE REFILLED–NO DEPOSIT–NO RETURN”. These were standardized in 1941 and were primarily phased out due to the war. Perhaps the most interesting thing to note about this bottle is the presence of the “-SIT (star)” on one of the small fragments. Only Owens-Illinois Glass Co., Brockway Glass Co., and Glass Container Corp. added the star after “deposit”. Over a hundred million of these No Return style bottles were made in 1941 alone. This one likely dates the the early 1940s, as though these bottles were in civilian use after the war the companies that used the star did not produce these bottles during that time. 1

Picture showing the “-SIT (STAR)” present on the clear bottle

Glass shard bearing “-FILLED” the full text reads “NOT TO BE REFILLED”

The Green bottle shows the “TO BE RE-” section that the clear one does not. The stippling on the glass indicates the type of bottle even with the missing “NOT”
